Travel smart: Best and worst airlines in 2009
ELLEN CREAGER
A new airline quality survey conducted by Purdue University and Wichita State University shows that airlines in general didn't perform very well in 2009. Delta, Detroit's biggest carrier, improved its scores but still fell to 15th place, worst of all major airlines.
Delta showed improvement in on-time arrivals, fewer lost bags and fewer people bumped from flights. But it had a higher rate of consumer complaints, which dragged it down compared to other airlines.
Hawaiian Airlines was first in the survey, followed by Air Tran and Jet Blue. Ironically, Northwest came in fourth in quality. It was absorbed by Delta in January and no longer exists.
